  1. There are many Comments at the NYT suggesting that REL did support slavery.

    The testimony of Wesley Norris is worth reading, Mr. Brooks. Wesley & his sister (slaves of Lee) escaped and were caught. Lee ordered 50 lashes for the man & 20 for the woman. The overseer would not be that cruel, so Lee found a constable to do the whipping (and rubbing of salt water in the wounds). I grew up in Arkansas, and was raised to think of Lee as a gentleman, but I realize now that Lee was a gentleman only in the sense of being privileged. He is not admirable. By the way, Arkansas’ law conflates MLK Day with Robert E. Lee Day. Shameful.
